New York State Announces Dramatic Increase in Energy Efficiency, as Recommended by Optimal Energy Analysis

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on December 17, 2018, that New York State has adopted aggressive new energy efficiency goals that will more than double the 2025 targets for the efficiency programs of investor-owned utilities. A Public Service Commission Order estimated that work toward these goals will create more than 50,000 jobs in the State. The innovative goal structure is fuel-neutral overall, with Btu-reduction targets for each utility territory. It goes beyond utility program-generated savings to include savings generated by codes and standards and other initiatives. The goals and structure are based on an analysis and recommendations by Optimal Energy, Inc., developed for NRDC, and in conjunction with the Governor’s Office, PSC, and NYSERDA. See fact sheet released by the NRDC earlier this year about that project.
